Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is a truly customized massage experience.  It will incorporate various techniques from a number of different modalities.  Each massage session is unique and based on the tension and holding patterns of the client.

Swedish Massage

Full body massage.  This massage technique is characterized by its firm, yet calming pressure that improves blood circulation, eases muscle tension, and improves flexibility. It is a Western style of massage using oils and lotions applied with flowing strokes such as gliding and kneading.  Swedish techniques primarily address the circulatory system.  It melts away muscle tension and reduces stress levels, and is able to break the pain cycle and any point.

Deep Tissue Massage

Full body massage.  Adds more advanced techniques which enable the therapist to address soreness in the deeper muscle layers.  Deep tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage except the strokes are applied with more pressure in order to stimulate the deeper muscles and surrounding tissues.  Deep tissue massage depends largely on client-therapist trust. This is because deep tissue massage is often uncomfortable, compared to a traditional relaxation style of massage (such as Swedish massage), and the therapist will only massage as deeply as the client is comfortable with. This means that the client must keep their massage therapist informed of their pain tolerance at all times during the session.

Neuromuscular (NMT) / Trigger Point Therapy

Neuromuscular Therapy is a very specialized form of massage therapy.  NMT is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial or trigger points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin and fascia) to balance the muscular system with the nervous system.  When our bodies are subject to trauma, such as an accident, injury, prolonged stress or postural distorders (i.e. sitting at a computer for hours) the nerves begin to speed up their transmission and begin to fire more rapidly. This process makes the body vulnerable to pain, dysfunction and further injury. Neuromuscular therapy is highly beneficial in re-stabilizing the neurological activity between the muscular and nervous system, which is necessary to maintain normal function and overall health of our body.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a direct descendant of Swedish massage because both techniques help heal injuries like muscle sprain and spasms. Many of the techniques of sports massage such as strokes applied in the direction of the heart are borrowed from Swedish massage. This technique is just as important for athletes as it is for relaxation - the body is encouraged to let the muscles relax in order to make room for a fresh supply of blood and oxygen. All athletes who are looking to improve their sports performance and get a leg up on their competition whether they are Olympic athletes, professional athletes or weekend warriors are candidates for a sports massage. For athletes, a rigorous training schedule is implemented in order to enhance their skills, strength, endurance and speed. Unfortunately, as the level of training is increased, so is the risk of injury. As an athlete boosts their training schedule, they almost always overuse their muscles, causing strain, tears and imbalances in the soft muscle tissues. Additionally tragic is the fact that most athletes, in their quest to improve, ignore aches and pains until they turn into serious injuries. The more a sports injury is ignored; the more susceptible it becomes to further strain and injury. One way to encourage muscle repair after training is with sports massage. Sports massage will help release any built up tension in the overworked muscles so that blood and oxygen can return to the muscle and effectively promote muscle repair. Sports massage, if received as part of a sports program, can help an athlete prevent injury due to overuse.

Don't know what kind of massage you want?

Ask your therapist.  They will be able to customize one just for you.

Need to relax, destress, ease muscle tension, and improve circulation?

Swedish massage will help you with these and more.

Why would I choose a deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massages work into the deeper muscle tissues and address soreness in the tissues.  There may be some discomfort during this massage, therefore communication with your therapist is key.

What is the purpose of NMT / Trigger Point Therapy?

NMT aims to address the reason for the problem rather than the problem itself.  The therapist will locate, treat, and normalize tissue disfunctions and trigger points.

Is sports massage only for professional athletes?

Athletes at all levels can benefit from sports massage.  Risk of injury is greater for athletes because of rigorous training schedules.  Massage can promote muscle repair.

Pre-Natal Massage

Prenatal massage refers to specific massage techniques that have been shown to reduce pregnancy discomforts and to enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and fetus.

Massage has been known to calm many of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy such as sciatica, swelling, back and neck pain, and stomach upset. Prenatal massage has also been shown to improve physical discomforts by encouraging circulation and by stretching the muscles and joints to their full range of motion to improve skin elasticity and body tone. Studies show that pregnant women who receive regular prenatal massages are more at ease - furthermore relaxing the fetus inside their womb.

Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient healing art based on the principles that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that correspond to every part, organ and gland in the body. During a reflexology appointment, the therapist will ask you questions to determine your present condition. She or he will then apply pressure to the feet - according to a reflexology foot map.

We all know that having our feet massaged feels good - especially after a hard day of work. A good feeling can lead to endorphin release and decreased stress.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated stones to relieve stiffness and soreness, and to restore energy to aching muscles and joints.   The warmed stones will encourage the exchange of blood and lymph circulation throughout the body, and provide soothing and healing heat for deep-tissue work.  Hot stone massages encourage circulation and ease stiffness.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing used to relax the body and mind.  It aids in reducing pain and stress by triggering the body's natural healing esponse.  Reiki is a gentle wave of comfort that provides balance and healing to the body, mind and spirit.  It brings harmony back into your system, restoring peace.
