Full body massage. This massage technique is characterized by its firm, yet calming pressure that improves blood circulation, eases muscle tension, and improves flexibility. It is a Western style of massage using oils and lotions applied with flowing strokes such as gliding and kneading. Swedish techniques primarily address the circulatory system. It melts away muscle tension and reduces stress levels, and is able to break the pain cycle and any point.
Deep Tissue Massage
Full body massage. Adds more advanced techniques which enable the therapist to address soreness in the deeper muscle layers. Deep tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage except the strokes are applied with more pressure in order to stimulate the deeper muscles and surrounding tissues. Deep tissue massage depends largely on client-therapist trust. This is because deep tissue massage is often uncomfortable, compared to a traditional relaxation style of massage (such as Swedish massage), and the therapist will only massage as deeply as the client is comfortable with. This means that the client must keep their massage therapist informed of their pain tolerance at all times during the session.
Neuromuscular (NMT) / Trigger Point Therapy
Neuromuscular Therapy is a very specialized form of massage therapy. NMT is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial or trigger points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin and fascia) to balance the muscular system with the nervous system. When our bodies are subject to trauma, such as an accident, injury, prolonged stress or postural distorders (i.e. sitting at a computer for hours) the nerves begin to speed up their transmission and begin to fire more rapidly. This process makes the body vulnerable to pain, dysfunction and further injury. Neuromuscular therapy is highly beneficial in re-stabilizing the neurological activity between the muscular and nervous system, which is necessary to maintain normal function and overall health of our body.
Sports massage is a direct descendant of Swedish massage because both techniques help heal injuries like muscle sprain and spasms. Many of the techniques of sports massage such as strokes applied in the direction of the heart are borrowed from Swedish massage. This technique is just as important for athletes as it is for relaxation - the body is encouraged to let the muscles relax in order to make room for a fresh supply of blood and oxygen.All athletes who are looking to improve their sports performance and get a leg up on their competition whether they are Olympic athletes, professional athletes or weekend warriors are candidates for a sports massage. For athletes, a rigorous training schedule is implemented in order to enhance their skills, strength, endurance and speed.
